Social networks (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and many others) forever changed the way people communicate with friends and family near and far. On a personal note, social media has helped me keep in touch and again with family and friends have not seen in a long time. But for every good with anything, there is a downside to using social media.
As the two students who recently dropped out of school in Atlanta to set up a false comment on Facebook about their teacher as a pedophile, that people are losing their jobs because of posts about their boss or employer. Colleges and employers are now checking out people on Facebook (including all published images) to assess their character before they are hired for a job or accept them in their college. Police are also using social media to locate and arrest people for various crimes. Social Media has also put gasoline on the fire of many problems in relationships and / or divorces in recent years.
My clients and other people have asked me all the time, "Are my posts private?" And my answer is always: "Not really." Please let me explain:
1 Google and other search engines will always Find Your Social Media Profile.
The next time you are on your computer, do this little experiment. Go to Google and type his name into the search box and a single left click on the "Google Search" button. Your Facebook, Twitter or other social media profiles will always be one of the first things that appears in Google before anything else.
2 No matter how you set your privacy settings, some people with certain Credentials can have full access to your profile at any time!
The stored Communications Act of 1986 - Section 2703, paragraph (B) - which states that a governmental body may require from your remote computer services (eg Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to publish the contents of any wire or electronic communication. In addition, without the required notice to the subscriber or customer, the public entity can obtain an order using the procedures described in the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure (or, in the case of a state court, issued a state warrant the use of procedures). It seems a legitimate part of some people having full access to your social media profiles, regardless of how you set your privacy settings!
3 Plain and simple, people will talk and stories!
You will not believe how people are connected to each other these days. One person can connect up to five or more persons in different circles, and some connections are made so that you can never know existed. You will clearly see that the profile where it says you have X amount of mutual friends, or Twitter profile, which will tell you and follow the X. And when you post something about another person, it tends to spread around and maybe back to the original partie (and) very, very quickly. Remember, this is the internet, where information is created and shared by everyone!
In conclusion, social media sites can be a great tool for communication (especially for small businesses), but prior to the publication of negative comments, keep in mind that great consequences and repercussions can happen to you because of what about to say.
