So basically, it all started when Nvidia announced plans for the future development of motherboard chipsets that will support Intel's new Core i7 Nehalem architecture. Intel has tried to speak from the nVidia with this plan, but nVidia has kept his plan and began developing a new motherboard chipset that nVidia would let fans use the Core i7 processors on Nvidia chipsets, which fans have the power of Core i7 and Tri-SLI GPU.
However, Intel did not want to go to nVidia with the plans, and this is the case in court, saying that Nvidia has a license to create chipsets that support Intel's QPI (QuickPath Interconnect) system and an integrated memory controller technology. However, Nvidia claims that are several years old license that allows them to be exact thing.
But what is really the issue here? It really just Intel trying to maintain their advantage, among others. Currently, only Intel's X58 chipset motherboard supports Intel's incredibly strong Corei7 Nehalem processors. Basically, Intel is sort of a monopoly going on in the industry, Core i7, because the development and manufacture of both processors and motherboards that work together.
Now, Nvidia wants a piece of cake. In previous years, Nvidia has successfully developed chipsets that support the Core 2 series processors (680i, 780i, 790i Ultra, among others), and they are very popular, competing well against Intel's own chipsets (P35, X48, P45, etc.) .. And now, Intel has launched a processor that exceeds many of the Core 2 processors that cost much more than the Core i7 processor. NVidia is definitely hungry for a big piece of this new series of processors, and now is trying to do the same thing has succeeded in making the reign of Core 2 processors.
So, here is a summary of what Intel will lose if nVidia succeeds in developing its new chipsets:
1 Intel will lose the advantage of saying that their X58 motherboards are the only motherboards that support Core i7 processors
2 Intel will no longer be able to have an advantage over Nvidia Core i7 and X58 motherboard, because nVidia will be able to create chipsets that enable the Core i7 and Tri-SLI graphics cards to work in harmony. X58 motherboards support up to SLI.
