3 To remove the noise. Apple's new gadget has not one but two microphones. Using it in a crowded and noisy bus, for example no longer be an experience that involves lots of shouting.
And now let me tell you about the "free" part. You see, all you have to do is test different applications on it, and then send your honest feedback about a company that manufactures them, along with a small essay describing your experience while using the application. As a reward, you will not get the money, but the iPhone that you used for testing.
