In the previous "IT Diversity" article I talked about information technology in two major career - IT systems and IT application development. Although you can spend a lifetime working on the basis of any of these sectors, people often wish to advance their careers and move up the ladder in the information technology management positions. In this article I will cover some important considerations to keep in mind while pursuing this path, and briefly explain some useful educational programs that will help you prepare for the trip.
...of information technology management activities exist at many levels within the organization. In a large organization, and could serve as an IT manager in just one part of the IT department (network, help desk, and application development managers, etc.), you could be director of the entire IT department or a senior executive as well as the main X Manager (CXO ) - where x = for information, the safety, the compliance C, T for Technology, K for knowledge, etc. In smaller organizations may find themselves as the only iT manager and will be tasked with supervising all aspects of environmental information technology.
...- for any level of IT management position that will be expected to have an in-depth experience in at least one specialized area (eg, systems, networking, security, application development, etc.)
- For senior positions, cross-functional IT experience you have - the better
- looking for a higher level, more in tune and you must be knowledgeable with the company mission, vision and business processes
.as an IT manager, a few skills and competencies are critical to your success:
- manage people: People problems can become overwhelming concern
.-. You probably will not have or maintain a level of expertise required for all people who are responsible for, so you have to employ staff who have the right staff expertise
- Information technology is critical to the success of most businesses, so they will often be under-the-top to make things work and get new projects completed on time. If you do not manage their staff properly, treating them with respect, professional courtesy and making sure they are still training, they will quickly burn out and / or do not enjoy their work and seek employment elsewhere.
- You'll need to remove or fire unnecessary or problematic zaposlenika.Nezadovoljan worker can destroy the teamwork required for successful information technology projects.
- Co-operation and facilitation skills: Most of the information technology fields require the interaction between IT staff and business. From experience I can tell you that both of these groups often have very little understanding of each others situation.
-. IT staff generally does not understand the reasons and priorities of business processes
- Business staff rarely understand the opportunities that information technology can and can not do for them
.- An efficient program management skills will help tremendously. Many IT projects are very complex, involving multiple functional areas in a variety of business practices.
- Strategic Planning. Information technology managers at all levels must be able to recognize the life-cycle needs based on current abilities, while planning for future IT requirements and upgrades
- IT managers must also be able to convince their colleagues to the information technology department needs are important to the company bottom-line, to ensure proper priority of limited resources
.- IT Maintenance Currency: Managers must monitor the development of IT to business and technology relevant to current and future environments. Failing to do so may cause the company to lose its competitive advantage.
Once again, this is just a broad brush to keep in mind if you are considering stepping into the management of information technology position. This is a sensible way for many senior service members who were in one or more of the many IT career tracks, or for veterans who served in the trenches of IT in any military or civilian settings. In many cases you have participated in senior leadership of the school or in the managerial role of IT in the military that have helped develop some of these skills. However, when leaving the army in pursuit of a career in information technology management, you'll probably be a brief civilian world business skills.
If you have any questions about the IT field, or if you are a member of the service transition into civilian life, feel free to leave a comment or question using the submission form below. I'd love to hear from you!
